Understanding Normal Vaginal Discharge

It’s very important to examine our vaginal discharge to recognize whether we may be facing a genital infection.

Vaginal discharge is a secretion produced by the glands inside and around the vagina and cervix. This secretion helps keep the vagina clean and lubricated, while also preventing infections by flushing out bacteria and dead cells.

During genital infections, the characteristics of the discharge may change: the amount may increase, the odor may change, it can become more watery or clumpy, and in some cases, there may even be traces of blood.

For this reason, it’s important to know what normal discharge looks like so you can detect when it’s time to consult a healthcare professional. Normal characteristics include:

  • Color: white or clear.
  • Clear and Elastic: during ovulation, discharge may become thinner and stretchier, similar to raw egg whites.
  • Texture and Consistency: thick and creamy at the beginning and end of the menstrual cycle, and more watery during ovulation.
  • Odor: slightly acidic due to the healthy bacteria present in the vagina.
  • Amount: the amount of discharge can vary throughout the menstrual cycle. It often increases right before ovulation.

✨ Knowing our bodies and our vaginal discharge is key to preventing future infections. If you notice any unusual changes, don’t hesitate to consult your doctor.
